Race 3

#2 Big Muddy
#6 Domain
#5 Point to Remember

There is lots of experience as far as routes go with some bigtime pedigrees to go along with it but I think they are all could be in trouble if the inexperienced sprinter #2 BIG MUDDY steps up his game on the stretchout. He got quite an experience in his debut, missing the break and dropping back some 20+ lengths from a solid maiden sprint field. Still, he gathered momentum and was really moving in the lane finishing a respectable 4th. He certainly looks like a horse that wants more distance and being a son of Medaglia D’Oro only furthers that idea. Pletcher has a front running type entered to ensure a fast pace and I believe Big Muddy could stretch out successfully. #6 DOMAIN was disappointing on open weekend fading badly after setting lukewarm fractions but he has run a few races that can win this and draws favorably outside. #5 POINT TO REMEMBER was overbet in that same race but did run well and Jerkens has been heating up this week.

Race 6

#1 Magician’s Vanity

#9 Lady Love
#1 MAGICIAN’S VANITY was a longshot at this level earlier this meet and will be again today. Still, the veteran mare ran well moving in hand around the turn and getting the lead before being swooped by even deeper closers. Now she cuts back a bit and hopefully Santana gives her a slightly more patient ride and she saves ground and blasts through the pace setters before those same deep closers get there. #6 LITTLE CODE takes a step down in class in my opinion after romping entry level allowance horses at Monmouth. Still, this is the right spot for her and she visually looks like one that could be a nice one. #9 LADY LOVE is a deep, deep closer who might get some pace in here but will need to time it just right.

Race 7

#10 Jumby Bay
#4 Black Canary
#9 Miss Gossip

Race 8 – Evan Shipman

#6 Wine Not
#1 Control Group
#3 Twisted Tom

This is a difficult race as I could make a real case for every horse in here. For that reason, I had to look for a price and made #6 WINE NOT the begrudging pick. While there are some confirmed speed in here and also some confirmed deep closers, Wine Not has a bit of tactical speed and enters off two shorter efforts at Belmont that were better than they look as he was forced in both to swing 6 wide. He still ran well but I think he can run better with a comfortable spot midpack and he will be a fair price. #1 CONTROL GROUP prepped for this with two wins at Finger Lakes around the two turns. His game is speed and he drew the rail and will be a threat to wire this field. #3 TWISTED TOM won the 3 year old version of this race last year and, while he comes off a no show effort, is consistent enough to be the horse to beat here.

Race 4 – Summer Colony

#1 Awestruck
#4 Moonlit Garden
#5 Nomorerichblondes

Not doing anything clever here in the Summer Colony. I think #1 AWESTRUCK has run quite well all year and, in her last two, she ran well against much stronger competition. She draws the rail and won’t get an easy lead but, while the other four flank her, I think her class will tell the tale turning for home. #4 MOONLIT GARDEN is rested off a career best run in the Lady Secret at Monmouth. This trainer can get one ready and they clearly pointed for this but she faces some experienced foes here and has done her best running when able to make a lead by midrace. #5 NOMORERICHBLONDES is the unknown coming from Dubai and placed somewhat aggressively considering she is eligible for an N2X. The 17 month layoff may prove to be too much to overcome.

Race 5

#6 Excuse My Charisma
#3 Shannon’s Girl

Race 6

#3 Vitsal
#10 News Anchor
#6 Source Control

#3 VITSAL stayed in when a similar race was washed off the turf and ended up running extremely well, leading some solid dirt horses for 5 furlongs before begrudgingly giving way. Hopefully, he catches turf today and I think he is perfectly prepped for this. In scanning this field, many of these horses look like chasers or closers that need every bit of at least 6 or 7 furlongs. Meanwhile, Vitsal has done his best work at even shorter than this. I think Jose Ortiz blasts off and the rest are running for second. #10 NEWS ANCHOR tries cutting all the way back after longer efforts. This colt has shown talent in his career and looks like he needs a shakeup. Maybe a hot pace in front of him in this dash will wake him up and he can loop them all. #6 SOURCE CONTROL is not a winning type but he does have some tactical foot and could sit in a midpack position just off Vitsal and beat them home.

#4 Richie’slilwildcat
#7 Gypsie Janie

I thought #3 OUR GIRL ABBY ran quite well opening weekend here when just getting nosed out by #6 Tee Up. In that stretch, she took the worst of a bumping match while chasing from behind. Now she draws inside and I think that could actually help Kendrick Carmouche use her speed to control and hold rather than chase. She will have to deal with the legitimate speed of #4 RICHIE’SLILWILDCAT, the rare Fonner Park shipper who is spotted well here. She could prove to be the speed of the speed but is going to have to prove she can get the last furlong after a battle. #7 GYPSIE JANIE was claimed by smart connections and unlike many of these has been rested and comes into this race fresh. She figures to sit behind the place and make a looming last run.

Race 8 – G2 Lake Placid

#1 Thewayiam
#6 Rushing Fall
#3 Capla Temptress
Dirt: 1,7,5

There is a real chance even this graded stakes race will come off the turf but assuming it stays on, I think it boils down to two excellent 3 year old turf fillies: #1 THEWAYIAM and #6 RUSHING FALL. Rushing Fall is clearly the favorite as she is a nose away from being undefeated and is a champion. She has improved right along like a good one would and did nothing wrong until she developed an injury and missed time including the Lake George here earlier in the meet. If that was no big deal, she is a likely winner here and will be on the Breeders Cup. At the short price though, I will try to beat her with the unlucky but talented Thewayiam. She has finished runner up in her last three starts but in each one has shown a wicked late kick in the lane that grabbed the eye. Perhaps the cutback in distance isn’t ideal but, if the favorite isn’t ready, she will be tough to handle in the lane. #3 CAPLA TEMPTRESS has been disappointing since her big win at Woodbine last year but she does figure to get the soft ground that she was used to back in England.

Race 9 – G1 Alabama

#3 Midnight Bisou
#8 Talk Veuve to Me
#4 She’s a Julie

The three top stars of the division pass on the Alabama this year, setting it up nicely for #3 MIDNIGHT BISOU to take advantage. I liked her against Monomoy Girl in the CCA Oaks and she was soundly second best that day. With her removed, I will believe one more time that she can finally take a step forward from her spring campaign and that would make her difficult to beat here. #8 TALK VEUVE TO ME is a personal favorite and could be the future star of this race but at a relatively short price, stretching out to 10 furlongs, is just too much to ask to make the top choice here. Ultimately, I think Midnight Bisou is the better bet today.

I am under no illusion that #10 SOUPERFAST is any kind of a superstar but the veteran has paired up two good efforts against stronger fields and is a candidate to finally work out the right trip. Two back, Joe Bravo tried an early slingshot move and he responded but moved a hair too early and was run down by a talented winner. He lost to that one again here against a stronger field where Bravo decided to aggressively prevent an early move. Now, he catches weaker, switches to Ortiz and could get the win. #6 GIANT RUN was a good 3 year old and after winning these connections almost half a million dollars, they are willing to part with him. He ran only OK last out but that was against significantly better and there is the feeling that his C race gives him a chance here. #10 ASTOUNDING drops off a win for connections that care only about winning, making him a short priced favorite here.

If someone is beating #7 ALTEA in this N1X allowance, they are going to need to have a future far beyond this level. Altea was my pick in the opening day G3 Lake George and ran like a winner, smoothly floating around the turn and leading under a hand ride until the final sixteenth when the overqualified winner got her. That race wins this race almost every time and I have not lost faith but I will try #3 KATIE CRUEL who beat 19 opponents in Ireland last out before moving here for the powerful ownership group Phoenix. Graham Motion spots her conservatively and he needs a win but he is 30% with first time North America horses and this one fits to a tee. She could have a future, much like Altea. #1 DATA DEPENDENT is the slower, “other”, Chad Brown horse but she has some talent and will be making the last move.

#7 Civil Union

Motion is yet to break through at the meet but I think he enters live here with a Canadian bred filly that he has given a few tries on dirt. #9 DESERT ISLE’s pedigree is tilted strongly towards turf so I think the experiment being over can help her and she has shown some flashes thus far with late foot that should be more geared towards the grass. Comes in fresh, attracts Velasquez and will be a fair price for a talented filly. #10 PETER’s KITTEN debuted going long at Churchill and ran well before the last sixteenth got her, getting caught by a talented winner. Trainer has pointed her for this spot and does well giving them time. #7 CIVIL UNION is a classy European import for Chad Brown, which is pretty much his specialty and so this has the makings of a star. We will see if she can do it on the track.

Wesley Ward pointed three fillies by way of Ascot to this race so clearly it holds an important part in his calendar. For that reason, I’m not trying to beat #4 CHELSEA CLOISTERS who was the favorite in the regarded Queen Mary and never got on track so he quickly rerouted her to a race in Deauville and she responded by running a good second. He has always considered her one of his best turf fillies and I think she is showing up to run well today. #6 ELSA is a Godolphin bred that can sit behind a hot pace that could easily develop and make the looping run. She was quite professional in her debut, against weaker, and looks to have a nice future going longer. #2 DRYNACHAN didn’t get the strongest of field and many of them were green and unprofessional. She was the picture of class but the waters get deeper today.

Thought #5 AREWEHAVINGFUNYET was a contender in a route earlier this meet but she caught a slow pace and a track that wasn’t playing to outside closers. Still, she was gaining some ground late, the best of the closers and now turns back. Luis Saez is going to have to get her into the race this time but there are a couple of stretch out sprinters that should heat up the pace a bit. #6 ASIAN’S WAY is one of them and she figures to go off favorite here as a universal trip horse that Rosario rode into a jackpot two weeks ago. She surely can win but the price will be short. #7 ANNA RAE starts off the claim for Diodoro and he has been striking with these claim and wait types at this meet.

Race 8

#7 Take Charge Aubrey
#3 She’s Delightful
#2 Starlite Mission

I believe that the drop in class from the NY Oaks at Finger Lakes to this N1X allowance is wide. #7 TAKE CHARGE AUBREY ran only OK there, especially flattening out in the late stages. There were a few horses in there that would be ⅕ in this field and the cutback to 7 furlongs should do wonders as her blowout win was around one turn. I think she is a very likely winner of this race if she runs her normal race. #3 SHE’S DELIGHTFUL actually already cleared this condition when she got quite good over the winter. She has regressed since but, with this being her third off the layoff, this could be the right time in her form cycle. #2 STARLITE MISSION finally broke her maiden last out but she has been trying a million things and finally found a field that was to her liking. She has talent, speed and could have a tactical advantage here.
